Description
Unlike other mammals, elephant bones are not filled with marrow but a spongy tissue, which aids in support but reduces weight. An african elephant's skull can weigh over 50kg.During our game drive in Meru National Park, we sighted this skull of an african elephant. I took this close-up showing honeycomb bone structure and the air cavities. This architecture is relatively light reducing the overall weight of the skull but at the same time very strong.
However, at first glance, it is unlikely that one would recognise this to be a close-up of an elephant's skull. The pattern of the bones and the ridges seem to give it an almost canyon-like look, which is why I thought I'd call this piece `Skull Canyon'
