Artist's Description

During a hot afternoon game drive in the Buffalos Springs National Reserve, Kenya, we found a committee of vultures congregating over a carcass. We sighted this pair of vultures: white-backed and ruppell's griffon vulture standing alert together on the ground eyeing the carcass nearby. I like this pose as it makes an `X' shape. The two species look similar but Ruppell's Griffon vulture is distinguished by the fact that its feathers are speckled at the tips and it has a white `collar' of feathers around the neck. On the other hand, the White-Backed vulture has a uniform shading of the feathers and no collar. Moreover, the White-Backed Vulture is typically smaller than the Ruppell's Griffon vulture. Sadly, the two species share a critically endangered status.
