Description
An allard's anemonefish takes shelter in the sea anemone for protection in the healthy coral reefs of Watamu Marine Park, Kenya
The sea anemone protects the anemonefish from predators, provides food through the scraps left from the anemone's meals and functions as a safe nest site. In return, the anemonefish defends the anemone from its predators and parasites, provides nutrients to the anemone from its excrement. Their swimming motion aerates the host anemone's tentacles aiding in the respiration of both partners
They are protandrous sequential hermaphrodites, that is, they begin life as males and become females upon maturity.
